Daily Maine Fact

"Mysterious" Billy Smith, who for decades was believed to be the only Maine native to become a world boxing champion, claimed May 15, 1871, as the date he was born in Eastport. But he was actually born in Nova Scotia. He won the world welterweight title in 1892, lost it two years later, regained it in 1898, and lost it for good in 1900.
