- Gen. William Sherman in a telegram congratulating Neal Dow on his 90th birthday. Dow, who died at age 97 in Portland on this date in 1897, was the father of Prohibition in Maine. Commanding the "Temperance" regiment, he served with Sherman during the Civil War.
